When the police
powers vested in the State are turned against its citizens, it is
called State Terrorism. This happened in Argentina in the '70s and
early '80s. Thousands of people disappeared or were murdered. They
did not have the right to defend themselves at trial, they were tortured,
many disappeared and their whereabouts are still unknown today. They
were deprived of their identity, buried as NN in common graves or
dumped into the river .
The total number of victims of State Terrorism is also not known,
this being a consequence of the methods used by the repressors. |
|
Officially reported cases count approximately
10,000, but as many disappearances and murders have not been reported
yet, it is calculated they would reach a total of 30,000. The military
dictatorship tried to leave no trace of this horror by hiding the
truth from the relatives of the victims and all the population.
Still today, 25 years after, society demands to know the truth about
the final fate of the disappeared, and that the law sentences the
ones guilty of these crimes against humanity.
